The Plan: Commuter Rail Service

Immediate Relief

  • Proposition 1 improves Tacoma-Seattle Sounder Commuter Rail service by adding four new round trips between Lakewood, Tacoma and Seattle.
  • Platform lengths are expanded to accommodate longer trains.
  • This increases capacity by 65 percent to meet strong demand in the corridor, giving more people access to reliable rail transit for their commute to our largest job centers.
  • Any additional funds will be used to build stations at Ballard and Broad Street in Seattle, for the Everett-Seattle Sounder Commuter Rail service. A permanent Edmonds Station will be constructed.

Improved Parking & System Access

Proposition 1 improves access by building permanent stations in Edmonds and Tukwila to replace temporary facilities. Proposition 1 includes two provisional rail stations at Broad Street and Ballard in Seattle.

Proposition 1 funds station improvements in Auburn, Edmonds, Kent, Lakewood, Mukilteo, Puyallup, South Tacoma, Sumner, Tacoma and Tukwila that are tailored to the needs of each location and include:

  • Expanded parking.
  • Pedestrian improvements at or near stations.
  • Additional bus/transfer facilities for improved feeder service to stations.
  • Bicycle access and storage at stations.
  • New and expanded drop-off areas to encourage ridesharing.

Eastside Commuter Rail

Proposition 1 provides funds for a potential capital contribution to a partnership for Eastside passenger rail operation on existing railroad right-of-way. This service will connect Woodinville, Redmond, Kirkland, Bellevue, and Renton. Sound Transit and the Puget Sound Regional Council are evaluating the potential benefits of passenger rail operation on this corridor.
